On the Languages of Photography – A Suggestion
Adrian Sauer

As part of the Festival Unit FUNCTIONALITY, artist and photographer Adrian Sauer is focusing on the media properties of photography. Starting from the programmatic works of Lucia Moholy and László Moholy-Nagy he explores the characteristics of the contemporary photographic idiom.

With his artistic-conceptual modus operandi Adrian Sauer explores the very conditions of the photographic image and its changed FUNCTIONALITY. In this way, he doubts the great promise photography makes of being a mirror image of reality. A past fixed in the image always has something intrinsically deceptive and constructed. To render the fractures visible Adrian Sauer develops a series of programs that generate images that reflect the principles of digital media.

With his spatial installation purpose-designed for the special exhibition venue in the SANAA Building, Adrian Sauer reflects in his own direct way the process of seeing: Photographs as objects, graphic spatial volumes, and an essay-like sound installation foster multifaceted reflection on the conditions and challenges of present and future image production.

The exhibition was part of the festival Try Again, Fail Again, Fail Better of Folkwang Hochschule der Künste Essen (artistic director: Elke Seeger). I contributed to the project as artistic assistant to Adrian Sauer.
